In the week since the New York City police were deployed to break-up the Million Youth March in Harlem, New York, reaction has been heated throughout the country. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is defending the police action and Police Commissioner Howard Saffir continues to attack march organizer, Khallid Muhammad, for preaching hate. But some people say that it is in fact Mayor Giulianni’s hate rhetoric that fuelled Saturday’s police action.

The Center for Constitutional Rights called the action a virtual prison-style lock down of Harlem. The group said that by blocking access to subways and barricading the streets of the rally site, the police violated the rights of free speech and assembly of the marchers.

    Guests:

    • Roger Wareham, one of the attorney’s for the Million Youth March and an attorney with the December 12th Movement.
    • Ron Daniels, the Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.
    • C. Virginia Fields, the Manhattan Borough President.
    • Steve Rendall, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting’s senior analyst and co-host of FAIR’s national radio program Counterspin.
    • David Patterson, a New York State Senator from Harlem. He is in transit to the Justice Department to discuss the Million Youth March.
