Top Republicans Break from Trump, Recommend Masks to Slow Coronavirus

HeadlineJul 01, 2020

South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem said Tuesday the thousands of people attending Trump’s Mount Rushmore event will not be required to wear a mask or to remain six feet apart.

Gov. Kristi Noem: “We’ll be giving out free face masks, if they choose to wear one, but we won’t be social distancing.”

Governor Noem’s comment came even as a growing number of Republican officials called on Americans to wear masks in public. This is Tennessee Republican Senator Lamar Alexander speaking on Tuesday.

Sen. Lamar Alexander: “Unfortunately, this simple, life-saving practice has become part of the political debate, that says this: If you’re for Trump, you don’t wear a mask; if you’re against Trump, you do. That’s why I’ve suggested that the president occasionally wear a mask.”
