I ask my students to report on one episode of Democracy Now, connecting it with the required class material. They may do more than one, and in some cases they want to continue to listen as well as report; which, of course, is the reason I require them to listen and write in the first place. Not only do I want to hook my students on good journalism, but the show also combines nicely with my Sociology course material where it is easy to incorporate some of the segments into the class discussions. It is exciting and rewarding to watch the expansion of Democracy Now in the past few years. Sometimes it seems to be the only sane voice coming through the radio.
