Refugees International estima que cerca de 5 millones de iraquíes han sido desplazados desde el 2003. Eso significa que uno de cada cinco iraquíes ha huido de sus hogares desde que EE.UU invadió su país. Dos millones y medio de iraquíes han sido desplazados internamente y una cantidad similar ha logrado salir del país rumbo a Jordania, Líbano, Egipto, Turquía, los estados del golfo y, más que nada, a Siria, que alberga a 1,5 millones de iraquíes.
