En las elecciones primarias demócratas, Arlen Specter, senador desde hace treinta años, perdió la posibilidad de ser reelecto por Pensilvania mientras que la senadora de Arkansas Blanche Lincoln se encamina a una segunda vuelta con el vicegobernador Bill Halter. En Kentucky, Rand Paul, candidato del movimiento Tea Party, venció fácilmente al secretario de Estado Trey Grayson en la contienda republicana de ese estado.
