  • An Israeli Draft Resister Goes to Prison Rather Than Serve in An Army of Occupation

    In Israel and the occupied territories this week a nominal cease-fire continued between the Israeli military andPalestinians engaged in an 8 month uprising against the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Settler leaderssaid yesterday that they will rise up in protest against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon if he doesn’t resume overtmilitary action against the Palestinians, while Palestinian officials are demanding an immediate end to road closingsand travel restrictions that have devastated the economy of the territories.

  • A Leading Palestinian Human Rights Activist Is Detained and Tortured in An Israeli Prison

    The shaky truce in the occupied territories, negotiated last week by CIA director George Tenet, calls uponPalestinian officials to pre-emptively arrest several hundred alleged militants who were released from jail when thesecond Intifadah began last fall, a demand Palestinian officials have rejected. They point to the more than 2,000Palestinians being held in Israeli prisons, many of whom have been tortured and almost none of whom have never beencharged with any crime.
