The Battle of Algiers, a 1966 film that poetically captures Algerian resistance to French colonial occupation, is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time. But in the 50 years since its release, the film is more relevant and urgent than ever. Screened by the Pentagon in 2003, Sohail Daulatzai argues that the Battle of Algiers is still being waged, as the “War on Terror” intensifies and police powers proliferate, from Gaza to Ferguson and beyond.
Come to this conversation between Amy Goodman and Sohail Daulatzai as they discuss the legacy of this landmark film, the influence it has had across the political spectrum from the Black Panther Party and the Palestine Liberation Organization to right-wing military juntas, and the more urgent story it tells about the post- 9/11 present and our possible future.
