Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The iconic civil rights leader was born on January 15th, 1929 and assassinated April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. King was just thirty-nine years old at the time.
This program aired the day before Barack Obama took his oath of office to become the first African American president in U.S. history, more than four decades after Dr. King’s death.
The hour includes extensive excerpts from two historic speeches: The "Beyond Vietnam" speech, delivered at the Riverside Church in New York in 1967, and "I have Been to the Mountaintop", Dr. King speaking in Memphis, Tennessee the night before his assassination. The program also includes music by Mahalia Jackson and Nina Simone.
