A Tribute to Yip Harburg
Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman interviews Ernie Harburg, son of Yip Harburg and author of the book Who Put the Rainbow in The Wizard of Oz?: Yip Harburg, Lyricist. Yip Harburg was a Broadway lyricist who who wrote such hits as “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” and who put the music into The Wizard of Oz. Harburg was a lifelong socialist who always included a strong social and political component to his work. This tribute covers the early history of his life, his collaboration with the Gershwins, an in-depth look at The Wizard of Oz, and a medley of Harburg’s songs.
The interview takes place at the at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center several years before it was broadcast on Democracy Now!
