  • Wisconsin Readies for School Voucher System

    Last week, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that taxpayer money can be used to send Milwaukee students to private schools. Milwaukee will now operate under a system where up to 15,000 students will be eligible for vouchers to attend private schools. This means that nearly $70 million will be siphoned away from Milwaukee’s already ailing public school system and put into private institutions.

  • Nigerian President Releases Political Prisoners Except Abiola

    In the first showdown between Nigeria’s new military leadership and promoters of democracy, hundreds of protesters braved a powerful deployment of soldiers and police last Friday to mount a demonstration at a downtown market. Security forces responded with tear gas and shots in the air. The demonstration had been planned weeks ago to commemorate Nigeria’s last multiparty elections, which were held five years ago Friday. The elections were annulled by former dictator Sani Abacha with the support of the Nigerian army, and the apparent winner, Moshood Abiola, has been imprisoned ever since.

  • Mad Cowboys and Food Disparagement

    The largest gathering ever of the leading companies in the biotechnology industry is taking place this week in New York. It is sponsored by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the world’s largest biotech group, representing almost 800 companies and more than 20 countries.
