A two-masted schooner sailed outside the UN headquarters Thursday as activists on board chanted and waved banners to protest the Vatican’s role at a global meeting aimed at improving women’s lives. Led by Catholics for a Free Choice, the group said they believe the Vatican should be classified as a non-governmental organization -an NGO-instead of its current status as a "non-member state permanent observer."
The Puerto Rican Parade in New York is expected to draw more than one million people. This year’s event will be led by a group honoring the Puerto Rican nationalist hero Don Pedro Albisu Campos. They will be followed by a delegation from Vieques, many of whom were arrested in the last month protesting the US Navy’s bombing of the island. As the World Petroleum Congress gets underway in Calgary, Alberta, activists have been converging from around the region for a Counter Congress dealing with the environmental and human rights impacts of the oil industry. On Wednesday night, Canadian immigration officials arrested two Bay area campaigners at Calgary’s international airport.
