  • Jesse Jackson Calls Shirley Sherrod a "True Freedom Fighter" Who Fought Back Against "Attempted Character Assassination"

    Two days after Shirley Sherrod was fired from her job at the Agriculture Department over allegedly racist comments she made in a selectively excerpted internet video posted by Tea Party activist Andrew Breitbart, Sherrod has received an apology from both the White House and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. Sherrod used to oversee rural development in Georgia, and Vilsack offered her another unspecified position within the department. Sherrod said she would consider it. We speak with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who suggests Sherrod accept the new position: "She would be a great face of redemption on our quest for racial and gender justice and quality." [includes rush transcript]

The official jobless rate in Nevada set an all-time high of 14.2 percent in June, according to a state report released on Monday. Nevada also leads the nation in foreclosures and bankruptcies.     Nevada’s US Senate race pits Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid against Republican challenger and Tea Party favorite Sharron Angle. Reid’s poll numbers were down, mainly over Nevada’s sky-high unemployment rates, but since Angle, a former state assemblywoman, won the Republican primary on June 8th in a come-from-behind victory, she has made a series of statements that appear to be hurting her poll numbers and have put Reid ahead in the race.
