Puerto Rico’s Anti-Statehood Governor Pledges to Oust U.S. Navy from Bombing Range

Puerto Rico’s new anti-statehood governor said yesterday she will hold true to pledges to oust the U.S. Navy from a bombing range and resolve the island’s conflicted relationship with Washington. Sila Calderón is opposed to U.S. statehood, which was championed by the outgoing governor. Her victory in November and her Popular Democratic Party success in winning the local legislature were seen as a collective “no” to making Puerto Rico the 51st state.
