Colombia: Buenaventura Residents Reach Deal with Gov’t After Three-Week Strike

HeadlineJun 07, 2017

In Colombia, residents of the port city of Buenaventura have reached a deal with the Colombian government, after a massive three-week-long general strike in the Afro-Colombian city. Under the deal, the government pledges to invest $1.5 billion to fund basic infrastructure for clean water, healthcare and sanitation services. The deal also calls for an investigation into human rights violations committed by police and soldiers against the peaceful protesters during the general strike. While organizers said ongoing vigilance will be needed to ensure the terms of the deal are met, they called it a “major and historical moment not only for the people in Buenaventura but for the Black movement and people in Colombia.”
