Progressives Say GOP Coronavirus Bill Would Bring “Mass Poverty and Mass Hunger”

HeadlineJul 29, 2020

On Capitol Hill, the Congressional Progressive Caucus is calling on Democrats to reject a Senate Republican coronavirus stimulus bill as a “policy of mass evictions, mass homelessness, mass poverty, and mass hunger.” The Republican bill would slash expanded unemployment benefits that provided an additional $600 a week to about 30 million unemployed U.S. workers. That expanded benefit expired last weekend; Republicans have proposed replacing it with a much smaller, $200-a-week benefit. Meanwhile, the Republican bill would add $8 billion to the Pentagon budget — some of it to pay for money Trump diverted to pay for sections of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
