Two top executives at the BBC on Sunday abruptly resigned following backlash over the public broadcaster’s edit of a speech made by President Trump on January 6, 2021, before a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. The resignation of BBC director general Tim Davie and news CEO Deborah Turness came just days after The Daily Telegraph published details of a leaked internal memo that said a BBC documentary edited Trump’s remarks in a way that it appeared he explicitly encouraged the Capitol insurrection. The BBC is reportedly planning to formally apologize to Trump, who celebrated the resignations, saying on Truth Social, “These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election. … What a terrible thing for Democracy!” Trump has repeatedly defended unfounded claims that his 2020 loss to Joe Biden was rigged.
