In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the death toll from an Ebola outbreak has topped 3,000, out of 6,100 reported cases. The World Health Organization warns the outbreak is now on track to exceed the deadliest on record, when a regional outbreak in West Africa that began in 2014 killed 11,000 people. Healthcare workers are racing to vaccinate people against the latest strain of the Ebola virus.

Salatiel Wayele: “Our experience in Bunia showed that those who died from Ebola were largely people who had not been vaccinated. Among those who contracted the disease but recovered, the majority had received the Ervebo vaccine. Based on that experience, we believe the Ervebo vaccine can also protect against other variants because it provides cross-immunity.”
