An Israeli court has brought criminal charges against a dozen guards accused of beating nine Palestinian prisoners, one of whom died from the assault. According to the indictment, the 12 guards entered a cell during an evening head count in November 2023, where they punched, kicked and beat prisoners with clubs. The assault left Thaer Abu Asab dead, with severe injuries to his heart and respiratory system. In March, Israel’s military dropped charges against five soldiers accused of assaulting and gang-raping a Palestinian man held at the Sde Teiman prison in 2024. According to the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, more than 100 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody since October 2023. Meanwhile, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has deleted a campaign video he posted to a social media account, following backlash. The AI-generated animation depicts Ben-Gvir denying food to Palestinian prisoners and forcing them along a conveyor belt into what appears to be a concentration camp.
