An anonymous federal whistleblower has warned the U.S. Postal Service’s new mail voting system is untested, fatally flawed and likely to lead to a “catastrophic failure” if it’s implemented ahead of November’s midterm elections. This follows President Trump’s executive order in March directing his administration to create federal lists of citizens and to refuse delivery of mail-in ballots to people not on those lists. In a complaint shared with the office of Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, the whistleblower warns that problems with the new U.S. Federal Ballot Mail Portal could lead to eligible absentee voters not receiving their mail-in ballots in time for November’s election — or at all. The whistleblower also warns of a “zero-percent failure policy” that would see even a single mismatched ballot cause an entire batch of up to tens of thousands of ballots to be rejected, until the discrepancy is resolved. The whistleblower’s complaint reads in part, ”USPS leadership, it appears, has discarded all best practices as they speed the project to be ready for a September 1 implementation — raising questions about whether catastrophic failure would be a feature rather than a bug.” Meanwhile, in a party-line vote, all three Republican commissioners against two Democrats in Tarrant County, Texas, have voted to slash the number of polling sites in November’s midterm elections by nearly a third, leaving 1.3 million voters with just 224 polling sites. Civil rights groups including the ACLU and NAACP warn the changes will disproportionately affect voters of color in Texas’s third-largest county, with majority-minority areas of Arlington and Fort Worth targeted.
