The U.S. Navy has admitted that eight service members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group attempted suicide during their lengthy Mideast deployment, when sailors spent 286 days at sea. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao made the admission in a letter to New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who accused President Trump of showing “open disrespect” to troops and their families. Senator Gillibrand added, “That this administration can find endless taxpayer dollars for bombs, ballrooms and billionaires but cannot take care of our service members is completely unacceptable.” In August, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth insisted reports of deteriorating conditions and mental health struggles aboard the Lincoln were “completely misrepresented.”
