Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

In 1990, a bomb ripped through the car of two Earth First activists who were on their way to an event to save the Redwood Forests. Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Instead of conducting a thorough investigation of the attack, the FBI and Oakland police branded Bari and Cherney as terrorists and arrested the two environmentalists for allegedly transporting illegal explosives. Judi Bari is suing the FBI for false arrest, illegal search and seizure and denial of equal protection of the law. Today in a federal court room in California, the FBI will attempt to strip away at her case by asking the judge to dismiss some of the charges.
