If you think Democracy Now!’s reporting is a critical line of defense against war, climate catastrophe and authoritarianism, please make your donation of $10 or more right now. In honor of Public Media Giving Days, a generous donor will TRIPLE your donation, which means it’ll go 3x as far to support our independent journalism. Democracy Now! is funded by you, and that’s why we’re counting on your donation to keep us going strong. Please give today. Every dollar makes a difference—in fact, gets tripled! Thank you so much.

UN Security Council Unanimously Condemns North Korea

HeadlineOct 10, 2006

The U.N. Security Council has unanimously condemned North Korea’s decision to carry out its first ever nuclear test. On Monday President Bush called for sanctions to be placed against North Korea.

  • President Bush: “The United States condemns such a provocative act. Once again, North Korea has defied the will of the international community, and the international community will respond.”

The UN Security Council is weighing a draft resolution written by the United States that would include a trade ban on military and luxury items, the power to inspect all cargo entering or leaving the country, and the freezing of assets connected with its weapons programs. North Korea has said repeatedly that it would regard sanctions as an act of war. The nuclear test has been universally condemned.

  • Javier Solana, the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief: “And we feel that this act of North Korea goes against all the principles that we defend. I like to say also that it is very bad news also for the people of North Korea. At the end of the day, the government of North Korea is spending lots of money for something that is not for the benefit of North Korea while the people of North Korea continue to starve.”
