Democracy Now! Introduces College Students to Media Issues
¨I use Democracy Now! fairly regularly now in the classroom. I teach philosophy at California State University, San Bernardino—about 70 miles east of Los Angeles. 40% of my students are first-generation college students. Many of them know very little about the media; in an intro to philosophy class 80-90% of them have not heard of PBS. I will show clips from Democracy Now! to illustrate points about what is occurring in the world, and I will have them listen to/watch Democracy Now! along with Fox News and some one of the ´big 3´ nightly news broadcasts so that they may see the differences between the three. I talk about Darfur in every intro class, and the students want to know why they haven’t heard about it. This presents an opportunity to talk about the influence of corporations in media and in our everyday lives, as well as other issues that lead to such poor news reporting in the United States. You’re doing a great thing for the United States and the world in producing Democracy Now!”
