DESCRIPTION: Amy Goodman will give the closing keynote at a day-long conference entitled Facing the Fracture: Media and Economic Understanding, which will bring together top journalists, scholars and activists for a day of dynamic public discussions about the role of the media in covering the ongoing financial crisis. Hosted by the International Media, Communications and Advocacy Program at Columbia University’s School of International Public Affairs and Columbia Journalism Review’s The Audit and sponsored by the Roosevelt Institute.
The Great Recession has come at a time when the media is questioning its future, yet demands on the business press have never been greater. Journalists are under intense pressure to analyze and explain the fast-moving events of the past 18 months while their own profession undergoes a major transformation. Discussion will cover: newsroom realities faced by business journalists today; broadening the coverage to include new ideas and new sources from Main Street; how the Internet has altered economic reporting; and the variation in reporting on the financial crisis across the globe.
Other conference speakers include: Chrystia Freeland, Financial Times; Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post; Steve Pearlstein, Washington Post; Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate; and Martin Wolf, Financial Times.
