    IT’S BEEN AN HISTORIC WEEK FOR GAY AND LESBIAN RIGHTS IN THIS COUNTRY. YESTERDAY, THE U.S. SENATE TOLD U.S. EMPLOYERS THAT ITS OK TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST LESBIAN AND GAY AMERICANS. THE SENATE NARROWLY DEFEATED THE EMPLOYMENT NONDISCRIMINATION ACT OR ENDA, A BILL THAT WOULD HAVE BANNED DISCRIMINATION AGAINST GAYS AND LESBIANS IN HIRING AND PROMOTIONS. THE BILL LOST ON A 50–49 VOTE.

    LAST NIGHT IN A PRIME TIME TELEVISION INFOMERCIAL, BILLIONAIRE H. ROSS PEROT, THE REFORM PARTY PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE, NAMED HIS VICE PRESIDENTIAL RUNNING MATE. HE IS PAT CHOATE, A LONG-TIME FRIEND OF PEROT’S, WHO WORKED ON HIS LAST CAMPAIGN. CHOATE IS KNOWN AS A POLITICAL ECONOMIST AND OUTSPOKEN CRITIC OF THE NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT AND OTHER U.S. TRADE POLICIES THAT HAVE LED TO TRADE DEFICITS AND LOSS OF AMERICAN JOBS. PAT CHOATE WAS ON DEMOCRACY NOW EARLIER THIS YEAR TO TALK ABOUT UNITED BROADCASTING, HIS CONTROVERSIAL COMMERCIAL RADIO NETWORK THAT PLANNED TO BROADCAST ANTI-NAFTA AND POPULIST VOICES LIKE JIM HIGHTOWER FROM THE LEFT AND CHUCK HARDER FROM THE FAR RIGHT. SOME HAVE ACCUSED HARDER OF RACISM AND ANTI-SEMITISM, BUT ON THIS SHOW, PAT CHOATE DEFENDED HIS POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC RELATIONSHIP TO HARDER. CHOATE WAS A GUEST LAST NIGHT ON CNN’S LARRY KING SHOW AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY ON THE REFORM PARTY TICKET.
