  • MONTSERRAT VOLCANO

    The Soufriere Hills volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat continues to smolder. But while scientists worry about a possible massive eruption, Caribbean and British politicians are trying to deal with a political crisis that has emerged from the burst of ash and lava from the fiery mountain.

    Volcano is the Hawaiian village, situated between Kilaueea and Mauna Loa, where author and poet Garrett Hongo was born. It is a "chunk of the sublime" — as he calls it — that he lost at the age of six when his parents moved to Los Angeles. And Volcano is where Hongo returned as a young man to reclaim its dreamlike landscape of fern forests and lava tubes. It is also the subject of his novel Volcano: A Memoir of Hawaii.
