  • Amnesty International and the U.N.

    For the first time ever, Amnesty International yesterday made a direct presentation to the UN Security Council, one of the most powerful institutions in the world and the one international body that has war making powers. The 15-member Council has long been criticized for burying human rights issues, particularly when the abuses involve one of the big five Security Council members or UN soldiers on peacekeeping operations.

  • Black Legislative Caucus Weekend

    One of the hot issues at the 27th annual legislative conference of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington DC this past weekend was the longstanding — and some say growing — problem of police brutality. Led by Congressman John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, the black caucus convened a special hearing, looking at both problems and solutions.

  • Campaign Fundraising Hearings

    The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee led by Republican chairman Senator Fred Thompson has been holding extensive hearings this past summer into White House campaign finance abuses during the 1996 election cycle. Starting this week, a new front will open on the investigation into Democratic Party fundraising practices. A 45-member House panel led by Indiana conservative Dan Burton will join the fray starting Wednesday.
