Profile of Retiring Speaker Gingrich, Livingston a Possible Successor
Newt Gingrich’s abrupt resignation from his post as House Speaker this past Friday caught many by surprise. For conservative Republicans, it was the desired outcome of a campaign to oust the Speaker, whom they thought as being too accommodating to moderates. Now, Representative Robert Livingston of Louisiana, the House Appropriations Committee Chairman, has all but declared himself the new House Speaker.

Tribute to George Goodman — Amy’s Father
George Goodman, Amy’s father, died on October 27 at 70 years old. Goodman too hosted a news roundtable, as part of a senior education program. A physician, husband and father, he inspired many including his daughter to social participation. Goodman favored Yip Harburg poetry. U.S. Considers Request for Pinochet’s Extradition
The U.S. Justice Department said yesterday that it has looked into the possibility of extraditing former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet to the United States in connection with a 1976 assassination. Orlando Letelier, a Chilean exile and former diplomat, and Ronni Moffit, his American assistant, were killed by a car bomb as they drove down Massachusetts avenue in Washington, DC.
