Internships

We require a two-month minimum commitment, 20 hours minimum per week. Positions are based in our Manhattan office, located in the Chelsea neighborhood. Internships are unpaid, but academic credit can be arranged. For internships of two months or longer, a $15 expense allowance is provided on days you work five or more hours.

Social Media and Online Outreach Internship

Democracy Now!’s Social Media and Online Outreach Intern works to (1) help disseminate Democracy Now! news throughout the Internet, (2) manage Democracy Now! social media platforms, (3) provide assistance to our news production team through interactions with fans/followers of our social media platforms, and (4) interact with our audience and broadcasting stations through online outreach and managing our social media platforms.

Duties:

  • Help disseminate Democracy Now! daily news through the Internet;
  • Foster alliance building and networking amongst Democracy Now! supporters and other like-minded groups and organizations;
  • Help generate content for and manage Democracy Now!’s social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+ and SoundCloud accounts;
  • Monitor the Democracy Now! social media platforms to engage with our audience and assist our news production team in monitoring the news and finding guests;
  • Support the development of specific online outreach programs.

Educational/Skill-building goals of this internship include:

  • Technical and journalistic writing specific to social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, SoundCloud, etc.;
  • Public relations and outreach experience;
  • Internet and social media research;
  • Experience working in a professional environment that must meet daily deadlines.

Archive Internship

Composed of over 70,000 media elements, the Democracy Now! Archive contains books, photographs, artifacts and audiovisual materials such as field recordings, oral histories, interviews and news footage from the 1980s to today. An integral part of daily operations and production of Democracy Now!, the archive is also used as a resource by researchers, filmmakers, artists and educators.

Internship:
The Democracy Now! Archive is looking for interns for the Summer 2014 semester. The program is structured for students and individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in the field of audiovisual archiving and preservation. Interns build skills, apply them in the workplace, and are encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas along the way. The position requires a 10-week commitment and 20 hours minimum per week. Scheduling is flexible.

Interns learn how to process books and media, and catalog archival assets. Responsibilities include cataloging incoming video created by Democracy Now! producers and other independent media and news organizations. Other tasks include adding metadata to DN! content on Internet Archive (archive.org), shelving tapes and books and producing labels. Through their efforts, interns are exposed to many aspects of the production and archiving work flow.

Ideal candidates are able to work independently and have an interest in current events, archives, and preservation. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro and cataloging (especially PBCore 2.0) a plus but not necessary. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone planning to pursue a career in media archives, information/library science, television news, or independent journalism.

Democracy Now! en Español Spanish Radio, Social Media & Online Outreach Internship

Democracy Now! (democracynow.org) is a New York City-based non-profit organization that produces a daily, independent, global news hour on over 1,200 TV and radio stations around the world. Democracy Now! en Español (DN!es) emerged in 2005 seeking to reach Spanish-speaking audiences in the U.S., Latin America and elsewhere.

The Democracy Now! en Español Radio, Social Media & Online Outreach Intern works in the Spanish Outreach Department to support the work of external partners, staff and volunteers, current broadcasting stations, the general public, and audience members, and communicates with prospective stations who may be interested in broadcasting DN!es programming.

Duties:

  • Help disseminate Democracy Now! en Español daily news through the internet;
  • Communicate by email and telephone to prospective radio stations interested in airing Democracy Now! en Español;
  • Internet research to identify prospective stations;
  • Work with local communities to introduce the internet as a new alternative for gathering information;
  • Foster alliance building and networking amongst Democracy Now! en Español supporters and other like-minded groups and organizations;
  • Assist with Democracy Now! en Español social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts;
  • Design visual material for the outreach program;
  • Maintain updated information on Filemaker Pro Database;
  • Support the development of specific online outreach programs;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational/Skill-building goals of this internship include:

  • Technical and creative Spanish writing specific to social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google ads, etc.;
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills;
  • Public relations experience;
  • Internet research;
  • Experience working in a professional environment;
  • Managing Excel and Filemaker Pro databases.

Hours: 20 per week (preferred: mornings-early afternoon), based in New York City.

Education Internship

Background: The Democracy Now! Education Initiative was launched in October 2011, to bring DN! resources to the education community. These free opportunities include inviting high school and college level students to visit our live broadcast, where they have an eye-opening experience and engage in discussions about independent journalism and alternative media.

The Democracy Now! Education Internship provides interns with a chance to make a difference by helping educators to use the Democracy Now! news program to teach media literacy and an understanding of the importance of independent journalism to their students. Interns will learn about the inner workings of Democracy Now!, work on developing curriculum and lesson plans, hone their research and communications skills, and be a part of an energetic, exciting team that works each day to use alternative media to bring positive social change.

Position Overview:

The Democracy Now! Education Institute is hiring interns for Summer 2014. The internship is structured for individuals interested in gaining experience in the field of education, lesson design, social media and outreach. Interns build skills in curriculum development, lesson plan implementation, online research, and are encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas along the way. The position requires a 10-week commitment and minimum 20 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Outreach to educators via various social media and analog formats, to invite them to visit live Democracy Now! broadcast;
  • Organize and assist in teaching journalism workshops to visiting classes;
  • Work with local schools and communities to introduce DN!’s Education resources;
  • Researching academic conferences for DN! Education presentations;
  • Work with educators to fine tune curriculum and lesson plans that use DN!;
  • Design lessons and curriculum for all levels.

Skills required:

  • Fluent in online research and social media;
  • Eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment;
  • Prior teaching experience a plus;
  • Prior experience with social media platforms a plus.
