Part-Time Camera Operator

Democracy Now!, a NYC based independent daily news hour, seeks a part-time camera operator to work the live news broadcast. Must be able to work Mondays and Fridays 7:15–9:15am and other weekday shifts as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Operate in studio robotic & manual cameras
  • Shade cameras
  • Make minor lighting adjustments
  • Mic and seat guests

Qualifications

  • 2 years shooting experience
  • Familiarity with Sony EX3 and Telemetrics controls helpful
  • Live news experience
  • Flexible team player
  • Cool under pressure

This is a part-time New York City based position with a pay rate based on experience. Internships

We require a two-month minimum commitment, for 15-20 hours per week. Positions are based in our Manhattan office, located in the Chelsea neighborhood. Internships are unpaid, but academic credit can be arranged. For internships of two months or longer, a $15 expense allowance is provided on days you work five or more hours.

Outreach and Development Internship

Democracy Now!’s Outreach and Development Intern works in the Development and Outreach Departments to support work with external partners and stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, current and potential broadcasting stations, and audience members.

Duties:

  • Communicate with Democracy Now! supporters, activists and stations via email, phone and in person;
  • Help develop, produce and disseminate publicity materials;
  • Contribute to ongoing effort to improve communication with volunteers;
  • Foster alliance-building and networking amongst Democracy Now! supporters and other like-minded groups and organizations;
  • Assist with Democracy Now!’s social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter accounts;
  • Support the development of specific outreach programs to educators and/or independent media organizations;
  • Assist in the writing, editing, and production of fundraising materials such as grant proposals, appeal letters, and reports;
  • Support administrative development and outreach functions;
  • Attend local and east-coast events to oversee outreach efforts;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational/Skill-building goals of this internship include:

  • Basic understanding of how a grassroots daily news program is funded, created, and produced;
  • Grant writing and copywriting skills for fundraising and outreach materials;
  • Volunteer recruitment, management and supervision;
  • Creating effective outreach campaigns and events.

Social Media and Online Outreach Internship

Democracy Now!’s Social Media and Online Outreach Intern works to (1) help disseminate Democracy Now! news throughout the Internet, (2) manage Democracy Now! social media platforms, (3) provide assistance to our news production team through interactions with fans/followers of our social media platforms, (4) and interact with our audience and broadcasting stations through online outreach and managing our social media platforms.

Duties:

  • Help disseminate Democracy Now! daily news through the Internet;
  • Foster alliance building and networking amongst Democracy Now! supporters and other like-minded groups and organizations;
  • Help manage Democracy Now!’s social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts, especially in tasks that assist our news production team in monitoring the news and finding guests;
  • Support the development of specific online outreach programs.

Educational/Skill-building goals of this internship include:

  • Technical and creative writing specific to social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google ads, etc.;
  • Public relations and outreach experience;
  • Internet and social media research;
  • Experience working in a professional environment that must meet daily deadlines.

Democracy Now! en Español Radio, Social Media & Online Outreach Internship

Democracy Now! en Español began airing headline news in May 2005, and it can now be heard on more than 340 radio and TV stations throughout the Americas and the world. The Democracy Now! en Español Radio, Social Media & Online Outreach Intern works in the Spanish Outreach Department to support work with external partners, staff and volunteers, current broadcasting stations, the general public, and audience members.

Duties:

  • Help disseminate Democracy Now! en Español daily news through the Internet;
  • Direct communication with radio stations or radio networks interested in Democracy Now! via e-mail, phone, or in person;
  • Work with local communities to introduce the internet as a new alternative for gathering information;
  • Foster alliance building and networking amongst Democracy Now! en Español supporters and other like-minded groups and organizations;
  • Assist with Democracy Now! en Español social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts;
  • Design visual material for the outreach program;
  • Support the development of specific online outreach programs;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational/Skill-building goals of this internship include:

  • Technical and creative Spanish writing specific to social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google ads, etc.;
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills;
  • Public relations experience;
  • Internet research;
  • Experience working in a professional environment;
  • Managing Excel and Filemaker Pro databases.

Archive Internship

Composed of over 70,000 media elements, the Democracy Now! Archive contains books, photographs, artifacts and audiovisual materials such as field recordings, oral histories, interviews and news footage from the 1980s to today. An integral part of daily operations and production of Democracy Now!, the archive is also used as a resource by researchers, filmmakers, artists and educators.

Internship:
The Democracy Now! Archive is looking for interns for the winter/spring 2012 semester. The program is structured for students and individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in the field of audiovisual archiving and preservation. Interns build skills, apply them in the workplace, and are encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas along the way. The position requires a ten-week commitment and fifteen to twenty hours per week. Scheduling is flexible.

Interns learn how to process books and media, catalog archival assets, and convert analog tape formats such as audio cassette and reel-to-reel tape to digital files. Responsibilities include cataloging incoming video created by Democracy Now! producers and other independent media and news organizations. Other tasks include adding metadata to DN! content on Internet Archive (archive.org), shelving tapes and books and producing labels. Through their efforts, interns are exposed to many aspects of the production and archiving work flow.

Ideal candidates are able to work independently and have an interest in current events, archives, and preservation. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro and cataloging (especially PBCore 2.0) a plus but not necessary. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone planning to pursue a career in media archives, information/library science, television news, or independent journalism.
