Talks over Debt Ceiling Remain Stalled as GOP Pushes Sweeping Cuts

President Biden has announced he is cutting short his trip to Asia as negotiations continue over lifting the debt ceiling in order to avoid the United States defaulting on its debt for the first time. On Tuesday, Biden met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other congressional leaders at the White House, but little progress was reported. McCarthy continues to push for sweeping budget cuts and new work requirements for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. We will have more on the debt talks after headlines.
