And in North Carolina, police in Charlotte say they’re enlisting the help of the FBI as they investigate the murder of Derricka Banner, a 26-year-old trans woman who was found shot to death in a car Tuesday morning. Police say they’re not investigating the death as a hate crime, because a state statute omits sexual orientation and gender identity. Banner is at least the 20th transgender person killed in the U.S. this year.
