Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Pope Condemns “Clericalism” as Root of Church Sexual Abuse Scandal

HeadlineOct 04, 2018

At the Vatican, Pope Francis opened a month-long international gathering of bishops on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis condemned clericalism—which refers to the extreme deference to members of the clergy—in his remarks.

Pope Francis: “Clericalism is a perversion and is the root of many evils in the church. We must humbly ask forgiveness for this and, above all, create the conditions so that it is not repeated.”

Meanwhile, a small group of clerical abuse survivors demonstrated near the staged official meeting, demanding their voices be heard and accusing church officials of hosting delegates who were involved in covering up abuse.
