On Monday, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the past year saw one of the largest surges of carbon dioxide levels on record, bringing atmospheric levels of the heat-trapping gas to 424 parts per million. That’s 50% higher than levels at the start of the Industrial Revolution — and the highest level of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere in over 4 million years.
