In Wisconsin, an immigration judge has ruled that the president of the state’s largest mosque can be deported. Salah Sarsour was arrested by immigration agents in March and held for more than 80 days in an Indiana jail. Sarsour came to the U.S. in 1993 and has been a legal resident of Milwaukee for over 32 years. He grew up in the occupied West Bank and was detained by ICE agents back in March. Democracy Now! spoke with Salah Sarsour in July. He said his time in ICE detention brought back bad memories of his childhood, when he lived under Israeli military occupation.
Salah Sarsour: “I never thought in my life that I will see such facility in the United States here with all this kind of bad treatment. So, immediately, as I mentioned, it brought me this memories, what I went through as a child when they arrested me from my house, when the Israeli soldiers came and arrested me and make me go through two years, at least, in prison for one reason: that I’m a Palestinian. That’s all.”
