Meta Ordered to Pay $25 Billion Fine

HeadlineOct 22, 2026

A judge in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay a $25 billion fine following a trial that found the company had been lying about Facebook user data for years. Meta is forced to pay its largest fine ever for its deceptive business practices, but it’s just a fraction of the nearly $220 billion warranted under the law. The case stemmed from the Cambridge Analytica scandal over which New Mexico sued Meta in 2021. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said, “This case has always been about more than one company or one scandal. It is about whether corporations can mislead consumers about what happens to their personal information without facing meaningful consequences.”
