Juan González Speaking on Media & Immigration panel

Highland Park, NJ

October 22, 2019 | Tuesday | 5:00 pm

Reformed Church of Highland Park

19 S 2nd Ave
Highland Park, NJ ( see map )
Juan González joins a panel hosted by the Online News Association’s New Jersey group. The panel is titled, “Media & immigration: How the current political & social climate affects coverage.”

Reporting on immigration in a time of intense divisiveness and heated political rhetoric can be challenging for local journalists. And while many newsrooms provide quality coverage, there’s been a fair share of coverage that dehumanizes immigrants, does not meet their needs, or worse, amplifies misleading or hateful rhetoric.

It’s vital for the public that newsrooms get this local and national story right. Join a conversation on Oct. 22 with immigration reporters and experts in our state about media coverage of immigration, what it’s been like to cover the topic in the current political and social climate, and how it can better center community perspectives and tell authentic stories with impact.

The discussion will be moderated by Juan D. González, an award-winning broadcast journalist and investigative reporter who is co-host of Democracy Now. González is a professor of communications and public policy at Rutgers University. He is also the author of “Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America,” and a founder of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

González will be joined by:

Monsy Alvarado, who reports on immigration and diversity for, part of the USA Today Network

Matt Katz, who reports for WNYC about immigration, refugees, national security and hate

and Hera Mir, who oversees communications and operations for the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice.

Seating is limited to 50. The event will open with a networking hour from 5-6 p.m. with light refreshments, and the discussion will run 6-7:30 p.m.
