Last night in St. Petersburg, Florida, Vice President Al Gore and Jack Kemp faced off in a cordial debate. The two hammered each other gently on the impact of Bob Dole’s suggested 15% tax cut on the economy and the deficit. They also debated strategies to improve life in America’s inner cities. But, one of the more interesting moments occurred over an issue that Clinton and Dole were able to avoid entirely in their first debate: abortion. Perhaps one of the most important moments of the debate will probably receive scant attention in the mainstream press, and that was over the defense budget.
