Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Pakistan: Taliban Gunmen Kill Over 100 at School

HeadlineDec 16, 2014

More than 100 people have been killed in Pakistan after Taliban gunmen attacked a military-run school in Peshawar. The death toll has reached 126 with at least 84 believed to be children. The Taliban has said it targeted the children of military families in retaliation for Pakistan’s anti-Taliban campaign in North Waziristan. Since June, at the urging of the United States, Pakistan has waged a massive offensive in the region, which coincided with the resumption of U.S. drone strikes.
