This comes as some 800,000 federal employees who’ve been furloughed or forced to work without pay for over a month will miss a second paycheck today. Federal workers are increasingly turning to food pantries as they struggle to pay for housing, food and other basic needs. Among them: More than 40,000 active duty members of the U.S. Coast Guard. Adm. Karl Schultz: “I find it unacceptable that Coast Guard men and women have to rely on food pantries and donations to get through day-to-day life as servicemembers.”
