Dear Friend,

This year Democracy Now! is celebrating our 25th anniversary—that's 25 years of bringing you fearless, independent reporting. Since our very first broadcast in 1996, Democracy Now! has refused to take government or corporate funding, because nothing is more important to us than our editorial independence. But that means we rely on you, our audience, for support. If everyone who tunes into Democracy Now! signed up for a monthly donation of just $10, we could cover our operating costs for the entire year. Please do your part today. Right now, a generous donor will even TRIPLE your first monthly gift, which means it’ll go three times as far! This is a challenging time for us all, but if you're able to start a new monthly donation, please don’t delay. We’re counting on your support. Thank you and remember, wearing a mask is an act of love.

Trump Calls COVID-19 “The Plague” in April Interview with Woodward as He Called for U.S. to Reopen

HeadlineSep 15, 2020

On Monday, CNN aired new audio from journalist Bob Woodward from an interview he did with Trump on April 13. At the time, Trump was publicly urging the U.S. economy to be reopened, but privately he compared COVID-19 to the plague.

President Donald Trump: “This thing is a killer if it gets you. If you’re the wrong person, you don’t have a chance.”

Bob Woodward: “Yes, yes, exactly.”

President Donald Trump: “So, this rips you apart.”

Bob Woodward: “This is a scourge. And” —

President Donald Trump: “It is the plague.”

Four days after Trump said these words to Bob Woodward in April, he sent out tweets calling on supporters to liberate the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia, sparking a series of protests against COVID-19 lockdowns.
