Peruvian Presidential Runoff Pits Ex-Dictator’s Daughter Against Socialist School Teacher

HeadlineJun 04, 2021

In Peru, voters are set to cast ballots Sunday in the runoff presidential election between leftist candidate Pedro Castillo, a former teachers’ union leader, and right-wing Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori. This is Pedro Castillo at a recent debate with Fujimori.

Pedro Castillo: “We are going to recover our wealth by renegotiating contracts with large companies, with mining companies that take the country’s wealth, to recover gas from the Camisea to give all Peruvians, to recover oil. How is it possible that in such a rich country there is so much misery, so much inequality, and only the biggest and the richest profit, even those that don’t work?”
