Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

229 Killed as Heavy Rains Trigger Landslides in Southern Ethiopia

HeadlineJul 24, 2024

In Ethiopia, at least 229 people, including children, have been killed in two landslides triggered by torrential rains in the remote southern region of Gofa. The death toll is expected to rise as the search for survivors continued for a second day. Heavy rains in the region have worsened due to the climate crisis, while other parts of Ethiopia experience severe drought. The United Nations warns millions of Ethiopians face malnutrition due to climate-related events.
