Hi there,

It is the job of the press to cover power, not cover for power—to hold those in power accountable by documenting what's happening on the ground and amplifying voices at the grassroots. In this critical moment, as attacks on the media escalate, we must continue to cover crackdowns on dissent, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, public health and academic freedom. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Russia Says It Intercepted Major Drone Attack on Moscow as Ukraine Pushes Ahead in Kursk

HeadlineAug 21, 2024

Russia says its air defenses shot down 11 Ukrainian drones in “one of the largest ever attempts to attack Moscow with drones.” This comes as Ukraine’s surprise offensive in Russia’s Kursk region continues. Kyiv says hundreds of Russian soldiers have surrendered since the incursion started two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Russian missile and drone attacks hit energy infrastructure in northern Ukraine, causing a large fire that released toxic fumes into the air from an industrial facility.
