UN Security Council Imposes Sanctions Against N. Korea

HeadlineOct 16, 2006

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously agreed to impose new sanctions against North Korea following the country’s nuclear test. The sanctions ban the importation of materials related to weapons of mass destruction, as well as ballistic missiles, some conventional weapons, and luxury goods.

  • John Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations: “The proclaimed test of a nuclear device by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea unquestionably poses one of the gravest threats to international peace and security that this council has ever had to confront.”

The New York Times called the sanctions the toughest international action against North Korea since the end of the Korean War. North Korea’s Ambassador to the United Nations Pak Gil Yon criticized the UN’s vote.

  • Pak Gil Yon: “If the United States increased pressure upon the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea persistently, the DPRK will continue to take physical counter-measures, considering it as a declaration of war.”
