Hi there,

It is the job of the press to cover power, not cover for power—to hold those in power accountable by documenting what's happening on the ground and amplifying voices at the grassroots. In this critical moment, as attacks on the media escalate, we must continue to cover crackdowns on dissent, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, public health and academic freedom. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Sudan, Rebels Said to Agree to New Ceasefire

HeadlineJan 11, 2007

In Sudan, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said Wednesday he’d agree to a new two-month ceasefire in Darfur. Rebel groups are also said to have agreed to the temporary truce, but both sides have defied similar efforts in the past. Bashir also repeated his government’s rejection of a peacekeeping force led by the U.N. Meanwhile at the U.N., Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pledged to address the Darfur crisis at his first overseas trip to this month’s African Union summit in Ethiopia.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: “I’m formally committed to resolve this issue as soon as possible to prevent further sufferings of innocent people in the Darfur area.”
