Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

25,000 Landless Peasants March in India

HeadlineOct 29, 2007

In news from India, about 25,000 protesters have arrived in Delhi after marching 200 miles to demand the redistribution of land to the poor and landless. The protesters began marching on October 2, the birthday of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi. March organizers said 40 percent of Indians are now landless and 23 percent of them are in abject poverty. Many of the marchers are farmers who have been forced from their land to make way for government-backed economic projects.
