Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

NRA Spy Scandal Linked to McCain Campaign

HeadlineAug 20, 2008

ABC News is reporting a Republican political operative considered part of the McCain campaign’s so-called “kitchen cabinet” oversaw a National Rifle Association lobbying campaign that allegedly hired a spy to infiltrate gun control groups. James Jay Baker served as executive director of the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action in the late 1990s when it allegedly hired Mary Lou Sapone to pose as a gun control activist and funnel information back to the NRA. Baker, who is still registered as a lobbyist for the NRA, is now managing director of the Washington-based lobbying firm, Ogilvy Government Relations. Baker serves on McCain’s Sportsman Committee and is a high-level volunteer and political donor.
