Hi there,

In this chaotic news cycle it may be tempting to tune out, but we hope you won’t—only an informed and engaged public can defend democracy. In these times of deep political polarization we need news that goes beyond play-by-play headlines, news that goes to the heart of each story by asking people to tell their own stories of abuses of power and injustice in their own words. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Russian Seizes Georgian Troops; Blow Up Naval Vessel

HeadlineAug 20, 2008

On Tuesday, Russian forces took eight Georgian troops as prisoners after they refused to let Russian armored vehicles into the port of Poti. Russian troops also blew up one of Georgia’s most sophisticated naval vessels and seized four US military Humvees that had been used in recent training exercises. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized NATO’s actions.

Sergei Lavrov: “It seems like NATO is trying to make a victim of an aggressor and whitewash a criminal regime. It is trying to save a collapsing regime and is taking a path to the rearmament of the current leaders in Georgia.”
