Hi there,

The job of a journalist is to go to where the silence is — especially when those in power seek to silence voices that question or challenge power. That is what we do at Democracy Now! day in and day out, and we're able to do it because of financial support from people like you — people who trust and depend on our independent reporting. If you believe that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to the functioning of a democratic society, please donate today. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Obama Slams McCain Over Privatization of Social Security

HeadlineSep 22, 2008

On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama criticized John McCain for his support of privately investing Social Security money in the same markets that tanked last week.

Sen. Barack Obama: “I know Senator McCain is talking about a 'casino culture' on Wall Street, but the fact is, he’s the one who wants to gamble with your life savings, and that is not going to happen when I’m president of the United States. When I’m president, we’re not going to gamble with Social Security, we’re not going to gamble with your ability to retire with dignity after a lifetime of hard work; we’re going to strengthen and protect Social Security so it’s a safety net our families can count on today, tomorrow and always.”
